| Description: | Significant advances have been made in visual neuroscience recently; however evaluation of and application of these advances to the visual and ocular motor systems remain challenging for neurologists. This is true even considering the important visual and ocular motor manifestations of major neurodegenerative and genetic diseases that constitute an important part of the practice of clinical neurology. In some instances, the visual manifestations may be early signs that can facilitate diagnosis and lead to earlier treatment initiation. Furthermore, visual and ocular motor dysfunction contribute significantly to overall neurological disability. As the population ages and genetic knowledge advances, both neurodegenerative and genetic disorders will increase over the coming decades. This session will explore how the visual system and ocular motor systems can be used as a model for investigating neurodegenerative and genetic diseases of the central nervous system. Major advances in techniques for assessment of visual pathways and in pathogenesis and treatment of ocular motor and vestibular disturbances will be included. With regard to the visual system, emerging technologies to be discussed include retinal and visual pathway imaging, visual electrophysiology, and psychophysics as they apply to the diagnosis of common conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative conditions. With regard to the ocular motor system, topics for discussion include neural pathways, molecular pathogenesis and rational treatment selection for nystagmus and saccadic abnormalities, as they relate to common conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, and degenerative ataxic disorders. This program is offered in partnership with the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society and the AAN Neuro-ophthalmology Section. |
