3IN.001 - Alzheimer's Biomarkers in Clinical Practice

Event Time: Monday March 18, 2013 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Topic(s): Aging and Dementia, Subspecialty in Focus
Director(s): Douglas Galasko MD, Gil Rabinovici MD
Description: As the population ages, the assessment and management of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other cognitive disorders will become an increasingly important focus of neurological practice. The past decade has seen significant advances in the development of existing AD biomarkers (e.g. MRI and FDG-PET) and the emergence of new biomarkers that directly detect molecular pathology (amyloid PET and CSF). This program will focus on the translation of AD biomarkers into clinical practice. Clinical applications will be discussed within the framework of new diagnostic guidelines that utilize biomarkers to supplement clinical criteria and increase confidence that AD pathophysiology is present. Participants will receive an update on MRI, PET and CSF-based biomarkers, and case vignettes will be used to illustrate the relative utility of biomarkers in a variety of clinical scenarios. Faculty will provide an update on international efforts to standardize biomarkers across centers, and on ongoing discussions regarding reimbursement for these tests in the U.S. New data on clinical applications of biomarkers will be presented in a poster discussion session and a “data blitz” of oral presentations. The program is intended for clinicians who care for cognitively impaired and geriatric patients, radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians involved in brain imaging interpretation, and researchers focused on AD and associated disorders. This program is offered in partnership with the Society for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and the AAN Geriatric Neurology Section.
