2HC.001 - Clues to Synuclein Spread in Parkinson's Disease

Event Time: Sunday March 17, 2013 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Topic(s): Movement Disorders, Subspecialty in Focus
Director(s): Kathleen Shannon MD
Description: More than two decades of clinical trials aimed to discover interventions that might modify the course of or protect vulnerable neurons in Parkinson's disease have failed to yield a single effective agent. A confluence of recent clinical, clinicopathological, and basic science research suggests the seeds of synuclein pathology may lie outside the central nervous system and that spread of aberrant protein may be important in the origin and progression of Parkinson's disease. This course for subspecialists will critically examine the evidence of synuclein spread in Parkinson's disease and its potential importance in understanding the disease and finding new treatments and therapeutic targets. This program is offered in partnership with the Movement Disorder Society and the AAN Movement Disorders Section.
Completion Message: Participants should be able to critically discuss the clinical, clinicopathological, and basic science foundations of the concept of aberrant protein spread in Parkinson's disease.
