3HC.008 - Amyloid Imaging: Are Neurologists Ready for the Paradigm Shift?

Event Time: Monday March 18, 2013 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Topic(s): Aging/Dementia/Degenerative Disease, Subspecialty in Focus
Director(s): Norman Foster MD, FAAN
Description: Amyloid PET imaging has recently been approved by the FDA. Neurologists will need to know how to best utilize this exciting new technology. This program will establish the knowledge base for understanding how neurologists can optimally utilize amyloid imaging in clinical practice. It will include individuals involved in developing recommendations about the use of amyloid PET imaging, nuclear medicine physicians knowledgeable about the technical aspects of amyloid imaging and communicating with referring physicians, neurologists involved in the day-to-day care of patients with neurocognitive disorders and familiar with amyloid PET imaging, and a bioethicist to discuss the ethical issues involved in amyloid PET imaging including scanning of asymptomatic individuals and non-medical uses. This will culminate in the presentation of cases representing the range of clinical circumstances when physicians and patients might consider amyloid imaging. This program is offered in partnership with the Society for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and the AAN Geriatric Neurology Section.
Completion Message: Participants should understand when amyloid PET imaging is appropriate and inappropriate, be able to identify when amyloid PET results are reliable and when they may be misleading, be able to incorporate amyloid PET scan results to increase diagnostic confidence and accuracy of cognitive evaluations, and consider ethical issues when talking to patients about amyloid PET imaging.
