Resident Scholarship to the Annual Meeting

The AANI and the American Brain Foundation are the official sponsors of the resident scholarship to the Annual Meeting.

Purpose

The resident scholarship program is an effort to recognize the importance of resident attendance at the AAN Annual Meeting. In order to receive one of the scholarships, residents need to be nominated by their Program Director. The $1,000 scholarship is used to reimburse resident expenses associated with attendance at the Annual Meeting. If a program is located in the immediate vicinity of the Annual Meeting, the scholarship will be $500.The scholarship will be given as an unrestricted educational grant to the resident's institution and mailed to the Program Director 8-12 weeks following the Annual Meeting.

The resident receiving the scholarship must be reimbursed promptly after the receipt of the educational grant from the AAN. Programs are responsible for providing the AAN with the correct check payable to, check attention to and complete address for which the check should be sent and are responsible for providing the AAN with any changes.

Objective

To recognize and reward residents who are AAN members interested in active involvement in the AAN.

Nominating Criteria

All residents nominated for a resident scholarship must meet the following nominating criteria for the scholarship.

• The resident demonstrates a commitment to neurological teaching, education, and/or community service.
• The resident MUST NOT have received one of the scholarships previously.
• The resident needs to be in neurology training (not a PGY-1 in Internal Medicine, or PGY-2 in Pediatrics on their way to Neurology) in order to be eligible.
• The resident MUST BE an AAN member at the time that the scholarship is awarded. It is recommended that residents check to be sure that they are members of the AAN upon being nominated for the scholarship.
• The resident MUST ATTEND the Consortium of Neurology Residents and Fellows (CNRF) Meeting on Monday, March 18 from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. and the Residents and Fellows Career Forum and Reception on Monday, March 18 from 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. during the AAN Annual Meeting. If the resident does not attend both of these events, he/she will forfeit the scholarship.
• The resident is interested in active involvement in the AAN.
• Nomination MUST include the resident's curriculum vitae along with a letter of support from their program director.

The resident scholarship nomination application materials are reviewed by a panel of members from the Graduate Education Subcommittee (GES).

Additional Funding

In an effort to bring more residents to the AAN Annual Meeting, a fund was established through the AAN Foundation to provide more Resident Annual Meeting Scholarships using donated honoraria from AAN CME faculty. Depending on the amount of donated honoraria the AAN will award additional scholarships for the 2012 AAN Annual Meeting. Therefore, each program may nominate ONE ADDITIONAL resident for a possible resident scholarship. The GES will apply the existing application/nominating criteria, selection process, and deadlines to the additional pool of scholarship applications.

Application Materials

In order for the application to be considered complete, nominating program directors or program coordinators on behalf of their program directors, must submit one complete set of the following materials:

• Completed application form
• Letter of support. The letter should illustrate the resident's commitment to neurological teaching, education, and/or community service as well as active involvement in the AAN.
• Completed tax form (W-9) for U.S. and W-8BEN for Canada) with institution information. (The tax form should include the tax information for which the check will be paid, not the program director or resident information. As noted above, the scholarship will be given as an unrestricted educational grant to the resident's institution and mailed to the Program Director 8-12 weeks following the Annual Meeting. The resident receiving the scholarship must be reimbursed promptly after the receipt of the educational grant from the AAN.
