Get Involved with AAN Sections
The AAN offers many opportunities for members to get involved in Academy events and initiatives, from joining sections and work groups to writing and reviewing clinical practice guidelines. Events such as the Annual Meeting, regional conferences, and advocacy participation programs give members the chance to improve their skills, advance health care issues, and network with their peers.
Throughout this website, you will find contact information for AAN staff who can answer questions about their areas and help you get involved. If you would like to become a member of an AAN section, contact AAN Member Services at memberservices@aan.com or call (800) 879-1960 to indicate which sections you would like to join.

Letter from the Chair
Greetings from the A.B. Baker Section of Neurologic Educators.
There were many excellent sessions regarding neurologic education at the 2009 AAN Annual Meeting in Seattle. The Education Colloquium on April 27, entitled "Ethics and Education," included several thoughtful and provocative presentations about issues concerning teaching ethics to trainees and assessing and changing the environment and institutional culture in which ethics and professionalism are taught. The 2009 A.B. Baker Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Jasper R. Daube, MD, FAAN, who addressed the Colloquium attendees on the topic of "When, Where, and How I Am Still Improving My Skills at Helping Students Learn." A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Awards were presented to 20 neurologists for their achievements in neurology education. Lori Ann Schuh, MD, Chair-Elect of the Section for the 2008–2010 term, has already begun to plan the 2010 Education Colloquium, which will cover themes related to International Neurology Education.
Submissions of abstracts in the area of neurologic education have increased in number and quality. This year, the platform session for neurologic education was held on Tuesday afternoon and generated much interest and discussion.
Douglas J. Gelb, MD, PhD, FAAN, from the University of Michigan, directed a new course on "Career Development for Educators," which was supported by the A.B. Baker Section and was well received. This course provided guidance and mentorship for those who wish to make neurologic education a significant focus of their careers.
The Section held its general section business meeting after the Education Colloquium.
Strategic Plan: The draft of the strategic plan for the A.B. Baker Section was discussed at the meeting. The plan contains sections on the history and current state of the section, a SWOT analysis of the area and endeavors of neurologic educators, and specific goals and objectives for the future activities of the section. Discussion included identification of a need to expand section goals to include the area of continuing medical education. If you are interested in assisting with implementing any parts of the strategic plan, please contact Nancy Poechmann, Section liaison, at npoechmann@aan.com.
Just a reminder that the A.B. Baker section has a listserv, which can be used for rapid and effective communication between all section members. To start a listserv conversation, email abbaker@lists.aan.com.
Thank you. D. Joanne Lynn, MD, FAAN Chair, A.B. Baker Section of Neurologic Educators
