Become a Key Contact in Your State

Are you interested in issues affecting neurology and the practice of medicine in your state? The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is looking for members from all 50 states to participate in a new Key Contact program.

This program will allow the AAN to quickly respond to state issues affecting the practice of neurology and patients with neurologic disease.

What is expected of a Key Contact?

As issues in your state develop, the AAN will send timely alerts to Key Contacts providing background on the issue and describing what involvement is needed.

As a Key Contact for your state, you can spread the word to your colleagues or get involved yourself. No experience is necessary and all membership types are welcome to join.

Key Contacts also will be asked to notify the AAN when new issues develop that affect neurologists or patients with neurologic disease. This ensures that the AAN has a better understanding of local issues, and provide assistance to states to effectively address issues that are important at the state level.

How does it work?

When a timely issue develops in your state, the AAN will provide Key Contacts with:

  • A brief history of the issue
  • The AAN's position and proposed strategy
  • Specific requests for assistance (i.e., testifying in your state legislature as an expert, mobilizing the neurologists in your state, meeting with key stakeholders, planning and implementing effective strategies to advocate for an issue). You can decide to act on the issue yourself and/or you can recruit colleagues interested in becoming involved.

Or, when you notice an issue that is important to neurologists in your state, you can contact the AAN with:

  1. The nature of the issue
  2. How it affects neurologists
  3. What would you like to do about the issue
  4. How the AAN can help
