Opportunities for Global Neurology at Puerto Rican Academy of Neurology Conference
The 20th Annual Convention of the nonprofit Puerto Rican Academy of Neurology (PRAN) will be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from August 27 to 29, 2010. To celebrate these two decades of our meeting we have developed a strong scientific program and many cultural events with our Latino flavor.
We are living in the Globalization Era; still we have a gap in understanding the meaning of this process and how it impacts our professional lives and responsibilities. Globalization describes a process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a global network of communication, transportation, and trade. The intensification of flows of people, goods, and services across borders, has a complex influence on health.
The Global Burden of Disease study is an international collaborative project between the WHO, the World Bank and the Harvard School of Public Health. This study pinpoints neurological disorders as the greatest threats to public health. As Neurologists, it is important that we get to know the opportunities and priorities of global neurology, how this can impact our practices and how we can get involved.
This program for our Annual Convention has been developed to provide an overview of global neurology in order to expand our knowledge of what globalization means for the neurological practice. It will review the status of health reform and future goals with "Mi Salud"; the opportunities and priorities of global neurology; and possible collaborations between the AAN and PRAN, among other clinical themes.
We have as our distinguished guests Dr. Vladimir Hachinski, President of the World Federation of Neurology, based in Canada; Dr. Robert C. Griggs, of Rochester, New York, President of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN; Dr. David Matchar, Director of Health Services Research of the Institute on Global Health at Duke University, at present based in Singapore; and Dr. Lorenzo Gonzalez, Secretary of Health Department of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Come and join us for this excellent educational program and enjoy our Caribbean charm. I look forward to meeting you in San Juan.
Your friend from Puerto Rico,
