Meet the Course Director: Carlayne E. Jackson, MD, FAAN
Carlayne E. Jackson, MD, FAAN, will lead an informative and popular course, entitled Unusual Diagnostic and Management Cases in Neuromuscular Disease, on Thursday, April 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The course will emphasize audience participation in analyzing 17 case studies. AAN.com asked Dr. Jackson to highlight some course features.
AAN.com: What will the format be for your course this year?
Jackson: Seventeen cases will be presented as "unknowns" in 10-to 12-minute segments. A question will be addressed to audience members via the audience response system testing their knowledge of each case's differential diagnosis, localization, appropriate diagnostic testing, or management. Following a discussion with the faculty panel and audience, the presenter will provide the answer and discuss the case further.
AAN.com: Who will be the faculty this year?
Jackson: The faculty includes myself, Dr. Yadollah Harati and Dr. P. James B. Dyck.
AAN.com: Who should attend? Who is your target audience?
Jackson: The target audience includes neuromuscular specialists as well as general neurologists, fellows, and medical students who wish to expand their knowledge of the diagnosis and management of patients with neuromuscular disease. We will have something of interest to everyone!
AAN.com: Will there be audience participation this year?
Jackson: Definitely—that is what makes the course fun! We will encourage members of the audience to guess the correct answer before the diagnosis is disclosed.
AAN.com: How did you go about picking the cases for the course this year?
Jackson: It was a very tough job since we had so many outstanding cases! Thirty-four cases were submitted for presentation; however, due to time constraints, only 17 cases were selected. We tried to balance the number of cases involving peripheral nerve, muscle, neuromuscular junction, and anterior horn cell pathology. The cases were rated blindly by each of the faculty and an average score was calculated. Cases with the highest score based on educational value were selected.
AAN.com: Anything special attendees should know about teaching methods or how the course will be run this year?
Jackson: The course this year will again focus on audience feedback and faculty discussion of each case. Based on the case and the audience's response to the audience response system question, the faculty will direct comments targeting differential diagnosis, diagnostic testing, and clinical management. The faculty will cover both basic concepts as well as clinical pearls for the most experienced neuromuscular specialist.
