Microsoft Co-Founder Paul G. Allen to Receive Public Leadership in Neurology Award
The American Academy of Neurology and the AAN Foundation have announced that Microsoft Co-Founder and well-known philanthropist Paul G. Allen is the recipient of the 2009 Public Leadership in Neurology Award. Owner of the Seattle Seahawks NFL and Portland Trail Blazers NBA franchises, the Sounders FC soccer team—as well as the founder of the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum & Hall of Fame in Seattle—Allen is being recognized for his strong commitment to brain research, including his $100 million contribution to the founding of the Allen Institute for Brain Science in his hometown of Seattle.
Allen's commitment to nonprofit organizations—exemplified by his nearly $1 billion in lifetime giving—has earned him the status as one of the top philanthropists in America. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1982 and achieving remission after 22 months of radiation treatments, Allen became particularly motivated to support scientific research and medicine. He launched his first foundation in 1988 to focus specifically on medical research, a broad range of health and human service needs, and the arts.
Join AAN leaders as they honor the recipients of the 2009 AAN Awards. From enterprising high school students to world renowned researchers, this program recognizes some of the top accomplishments in neuroscience research.
