Program Description
This program will focus on the management of seizures and epilepsy of all age groups and special populations (pediatrics, elderly, the refractory patient, and women of child bearing potential). Faculty will detail updates on medications available for seizures and epilepsy, both currently available and those that are in the late stages of clinical trials with potential FDA approval in the coming years. Emphasis will be given on clinical practice guidelines regarding the choice of seizure medications and therapeutic monitoring. In addition, faculty will discuss the use of generics and bioequivalence. Faculty will cover treatment of the refractory epilepsy patient, detailing surgery, imaging, and epilepsy stimulation device updates; provide updates on pediatric epilepsy management, including surgery and the ketogenic diet; present the latest information on women's issues with regard to pregnancy registries, new clinical guidelines regarding the treatment of women with epilepsy, and bone health and metabolism issues; highlight the best evidence to support choices of different medications for older adult individuals suffering from seizures; and discuss how to best correctly diagnose patients with seizures. A seizure and epilepsy video EEG quiz will highlight how to recognize spells in various age groups, and audience participation and discussion are strongly encouraged.
