Honoring a Giant of Neurology

Vincent Di Carlo, MD, came to the US from his native Italy on a Fulbright scholarship in 1961. He began his neurological career researching the role of neurotransmitters in schizophrenia at the State Mental Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. After teaching at the University of Chicago, Loyola University, and Indiana University Northwest, Di Carlo and his family moved to the University of Southern Florida in Tampa in 1976, where was acting chair of the neurology department. He also pursued his research, covering a broad spectrum including spinal cord injury, neurotransmitter innervation of blood vessels, migraine headache, ALS, and autism. Di Carlo's investigations continued after leaving the university and starting his private practice.

Neurology was a family affair for Di Carlo and his wife, AnnaMaria. An AAN member since 1977, Di Carlo was active in the Academy throughout his career. His wife, AnnaMaria, joined the AAN Alliance, where she served as president, and continues to work with the AAN Foundation. Two of their six children became physicians; Rosanna Di Carlo Garner, MD, a neurologist and AAN member, took over her father's neurology practice.

In 2002, Di Carlo experienced a stroke that eventually claimed his life. Through this devastating event, the family came to understand that prevention and early intervention are the keys to controlling this disease. They are pleased to work with the AAN Foundation to honor Di Carlo's lifelong commitment to research, and to advance stroke research leading to better treatments and cures. Donations to this fund will help support groundbreaking neurological research.
