Honoring a Giant of Neurology
Kenneth M. Viste, Jr., MD, was and Chair of the AAN Foundation and a Past President of the AAN (1995-1997) at the time of his death in 2005. Throughout his distinguished career as a neurologist, Viste worked tirelessly on behalf of his patients. His commitment to improving the lives of others was without comparison. His successes were lauded by his peers and inspired his community.
Viste graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and attended Northwestern Medical School. In his private practice at Lakeside Neurocare in Oshkosh, WI, he gave personal, compassionate, and expert care to his patients. His personal example inspired his patients and helped them adapt to and overcome the physical challenges of their ailments. As medical director of the Physical Rehabilitation Unit at Mercy Medical Center since 1974, he made vital resources available to disabled individuals throughout the community.
It would be hard to overestimate the influence Dr. Viste has had on healthcare policy in the United States. A dynamic leader, he was a frequent visitor to the Wisconsin and US Capitols. He was president of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, a state delegate to the American Medical Association, health advisor to Governor Tommy Thompson, and member of the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council during the Clinton administration.
Stricken with polio that left him in a wheelchair at the age of 13, Dr. Viste never let his disability get in the way of living his life to the fullest and in service to his family, patients, community, state, and nation.
