Benefits:
As part of our organization, we run a multi-specialty health care clinic with nine full-time and about 20 part-time specialists. We have a very active neurology service since we treat individuals with disabilities. We have both an epilepsy and MS clinic. We embarked on implementing an EMR for several reasons. My greatest concern was the volume and organization of our charts. Many of our patients had three to four volume charts with broken binders and loose pages. Also, since we provide multiple services, locating a chart consumed a lot of staff time and delayed our ability to return patient phone calls.
We have been paperless for 1½ years, which has accomplished the following:
- Much better documentation including telephone calls, on call, and charted notes.
- No longer have to hunt for charts. Charts are always accessible.
- Refills and patient calls are returned more quickly.
- We have cut our transcription costs in half and anticipate additional savings.
- We are reducing medical records staff.
- We will soon be moving our medical records department into a smaller space.
- Our nurses are happier.
- We have actually started to receive cash awards from some HMOs for having an EMR.
