NINDS Information & Resources

The American Academy of Neurology announces an online collaboration with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a leader in research on brain and nervous system disorders. Through a dynamic RSS feed from the NINDS website, current news, information, and press releases from NINDS are now available on AAN.com.

In addition, AAN.com features an index of neurological disorders provided by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Search for a disorder in the index.

Disorders Index

This valuable tool offers detailed descriptions, facts on treatment and prognosis, and patient organization contact information for more than 250 identified neurological disorders.

Intended for use both by physicians and patients, the NINDS index provides information on disorders arranged by name, featuring topics such as:

  • Description of disorder
  • Prognosis
  • Treatment
  • Research
  • Organizations

Search for a disorder in the index using the alphabetical navigation bar at the top of each page within the index.

NINDS Clinical Research Collaboration

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)—part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services—has created the NINDS Clinical Research Collaboration (CRC) to help people join research studies to develop new and better treatments, faster.

Offering a new opportunity for physicians and patients who want to learn about or participate in research studies of neurological diseases, the NINDS CRC helps people quickly find actively recruiting research studies for which they may be eligible. Physicians now have the opportunity to perform NINDS research in their own offices, provided with the latest updates and results from research studies.

Become a NINDS CRC Participant. Anyone can join (patients, physicians, family, friends) and receive free information. It takes less than 2 minutes and does not obligate you to participate in research.

Find a Research Study. Check to see if you or someone you know is eligible for a study.

Clinical Research

Clinical trials are research studies on humans that are designed to answer specific questions about vaccines or new therapies, to test new ways of using known treatments, or to find out more about a disorder. The National Institutes of Health has developed ClinicalTrials.gov to provide current information about clinical research studies. Before proceeding, you may want to learn more about clinical trials.

  • Provides grants-in-aid to public and private institutions and individuals in fields related to its areas of interest, including research project, program project, and research center grants
  • Operates a program of contracts for the funding of research and research support efforts in selected areas of institute need
  • Provides individual and institutional fellowships to increase scientific expertise in neurological fields
  • Conducts a diversified program of intramural and collaborative research in its own laboratories, branches, and clinics
