What is an RSS reader?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, a delivery format for regularly updated web content. News and media outlets, blogs, and other online publishers use RSS to distribute content to subscribers.
You can receive news updates in neurology from the AAN using an RSS reader, a program that regularly checks for updates to be sent straight to your computer or mobile assistant.
Some of the more popular, free RSS readers include:
- Omea Reader (requires program installation)
- Bloglines (requires an account)
- Google Reader (requires an account)
Below are instructions for using an RSS reader.
Omea Reader
Get started by visiting www.jetbrains.com/omea/reader.
- Download and run the installer for Omea reader.
- Once installed, open Omea reader.
- Add a subscription link by clicking the "feeds" tab.
- Click the "Subscribe" button.

- Paste the RSS feed subscription link into the field labeled "Enter the address of an RSS or ATOM feed"
- Click the "Next" button.
- Click the "Finish" button to complete the subscription process.
Any subscription you are subscribed to shows up under the "Feeds" section on the left.

Bloglines
Get started by visiting www.bloglines.com.
To use Bloglines you must be a registered user.
- Click the "Sign up now it's free" button to get started.
- Follow the instructions online and return to your email to confirm your account.
Once registration is completed you can choose to download a notifier program or program extension that will automatically tell you when a new RSS feed has been released.
Get started by logging in to your Bloglines account.
- Under "Additional Features" select "Download Notifier".
- From the list provided, select the appropriate download according to your computer and operating system type.
- Follow the instructions in the installer you choose.

- Click the "add" link
- Paste the RSS feed subscription link into the field next to where it reads "Blog or Feed URL".
- Click the "Subscribe" button.

- Under "Available Feeds" check the box next to the RSS feed's title
- Under "Options" click the "Subscribe" button.

Google Reader
Get started by visiting www.google.com/reader/view.
In order to access the google RSS reader, you must first have an online Gmail (google email) account. If you do not, you will be prompted to create an account.
Once logged into your Gmail account
- Click the word "Reader" at on the top of the page.
- Click the "Add subscription" button
- Paste the RSS feed subscription link into the field
- Click "Add" to confirm your subscription.

Any subscription you are subscribed to shows up under the "Add subscription" button.
