Members of the AAN are invited to join the Senior Member Consortium. You do not need to be a Senior Member of the AAN to join! All members are welcome.

The Consortium was originally formed in 2007 as the Retired Member Consortium, but was recently renamed to better reflect the composition of its members. This Consortium has allowed members to make recommendations on improving AAN benefits for retired members and members considering retirement. Consortium members have been successful at sharing opportunities for continued involvement in the neurology profession by sharing experiences and expertise, holding discussions on preparing for a life transition, sharing possible second career paths and volunteer opportunities, and discussing ways to financially prepare for retirement.

The Consortium has also assisted AAN senior members in remaining involved in AAN activities. The Consortium, currently at approximately 150 members, meets once a year at the AAN's Annual Meeting. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Senior Member Consortium, please contact Lynee Koester at lkoester@aan.com or (612) 928–6127.

Offerings available to Senior Member Consortium members:

  • Involvement in the Senior Member Consortium listserv! Ability to network with other members of the consortium, and be kept in the loop of upcoming events or volunteer opportunities
  • Reviewing AAN guidelines for the AAN's Center for Health Policy. Requests for volunteer reviewers are sent out on approximately a quarterly basis.
  • Coordinating blind review for Continuum manuscripts.
  • Involvement and mentorship opportunities with SIGN (Student Interest Group In Neurology) and the Consortium for Neurology Program Directors
  • Mentorship opportunities and attendance at the Resident and Fellows Career Forum.
  • Opportunity to be an expert case reviewer for PRMS, the AAN's medical malpractice insurance provider.
  • Mentorship opportunities in the Summer Research School Program and involvement with outreach to local high schools.
  • Opportunities to contribute articles for medical students and clerkship director web pages.
  • Mentoring junior reviewers for the Resident and Fellow webpage of the Journal.
  • Review of Journal submissions from non–English speaking authors.

2011 Senior Member Consortium Meeting

Several recent winners of the AAN Foundation's Clinical Research Training Fellowship Awards were in attendance to present information about how winning the award has changed their lives and has allowed them to further research neurological disease. Members of the AAN's Membership Committee also stopped in for a light reception during the second hour of the meeting.
