Neurologists may see their E/M coding come under scrutiny by a RAC audit. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently approved Connolly, Inc. the Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) for region C to begin conducting audits of coding for E/M services, including CPT® code 99215 in physician offices. These reviews are expected to begin imminently in region C and, according to CMS, are likely to be approved in other Medicare regions in the near future. RACs are responsible for conducting postpayment reviews to identify and correct improper payments. If an improper payment is identified, RACs notify Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) to take administrative action.
