Academy Responds to Proposal to Eliminate Consultation Codes

Urges CMS to Implement Updated Practice Expense Data

On August 31, the Academy submitted a detailed comment letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on its proposed 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Among other issues, the letter

• Stated the Academy's opposition to the proposed elimination of the consultation codes
• Expressed support for the proposed full implementation in 2010 of new practice expense survey data made available by a survey in which the Academy participated in conjunction with the American Medical Association (AMA), explaining that the data came out of a methodologically rigorous survey process and should be fully implemented in 2010
• Showed Academy support for the proposal to change the definition of physician services under the sustainable growth rate (SGR) to exclude physician-administered drugs
