In an October 2009 update to its medical policy for magnetoencephalography (MEG), Aetna, one of the nation's largest private insurance companies, references the Academy's own model policy document for the technology. The current Aetna policy now includes a favorable coverage decision on MEG for pre-surgical evaluation of epilepsy patients.

MEG experts within the Academy are certain that the Academy's policy review was a crucial piece of information that assisted in Aetna's change in policy. Also, many Medicare carriers currently cover this use of MEG.
