Program Director Recognition Award

The Program Director Recognition Award is intended to acknowledge excellence on behalf of neurology program directors. Program directors face many challenges in administering a residency program. The time has come to recognize individuals whose leadership, creativity, and innovation, is crucial in ensuring the future of Neurology.
- Two recipients will annually be selected for the Program Director Recognition Award.
- Nominations for the 2013 award will be accepted until October 1, 2012, and selection will be made in December 2012.
- Nominations should be inclusive in regards to gender and under-represented groups.
- Candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated.
- Posthumous nominations will not be accepted.
Applications MUST include:
- the nominee's CV (submitted by the candidate)
- a letter of recommendation (submitted by the nominator)
- a letter of interest (submitted by the candidate). Indicate number of years as a program director and highlight benchmark qualities, (i.e. summarize important points which include unusual attributes). For example, a unique attribute may be that you have been the program director for the same program for more than 10 years. An important point may be that you are a widely recognized, highly respected leader, an expert in the field of neurology. Include evidence of academic contribution to:
- Program/Curriculum (developed teaching/evaluation tools, designed a curriculum to include the general competencies)
- Leadership/Values/Principles
- Role Model/Mentorship
- Teaching and Other Awards
- Resident/Faculty Development
- Fostering innovation and improvement
- National, state, local activities related to teaching and education
- Education/Scholarship ( presentations, publications related to education)
- Research and Scholarly activity in the field
Criteria for the Program Director Recognition Award. The nominees should have:
- An active AAN membership. An active member is defined as a physician certified in neurology or child neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the Professional Corporation of Physicians of Quebec.
- A current program director (2008-2013) with at least five year's experience as a program director. Associate program directors are not eligible.
- Demonstrated excellence in resident education.
- Demonstrated record of leadership, creativity, innovation, and scholarship.
