Association between Sarcopenia and Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

DPN, a common complication of diabetes mellitus, typically involves either somatic or autonomic nervous system and may play an important role in muscle structure and function.  Prior studies have reported an association between DPN and sarcopenia, although their relationship was inconsistent. 
Our systemic review and meta-analysis identified the relationship between diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and sarcopenia by investigating all eligible studies and summarizing their results.
A study was performed by using MEDLINE and EMBASE database from inception to January 1st, 2021, to identify all cross-sectional studies that investigated the association between the presence DPN and sarcopenia among diabetic patients.  Data from eligible studies, including point estimates and standard errors, were analyzed using the generic inverse variance method by DerSimonian and Laird. 
Of 3,007 retrieved articles, four studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled analysis found a significant association between sarcopenia and DPN with the pooled odds ratio of 1.58 (95% CI, 1.22 – 2.05; I2 0%). 
The current study found a significant association between DPN and sarcopenia among diabetic patients.
