Participants should be able to discuss with patients the evidence for marijuana risks and benefits in epilepsy; advise women with epilepsy on the appropriate contraception, based on their individual antiepileptic treatment; employ a treatment algorithm when catamenial seizure exacerbations are present; counsel women and families regarding the risk of autism with in utero valproate exposure; and understand the surgical options for medically intractable epilepsy patients, including emerging, less invasive approaches.
