2014 Annual Meeting | 4MS.002 - Advances in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disability: From Genetics to Clinical Practice

Tuesday 04/29/14
06:30 AM - 08:00 AM Add To Calendar
This program will be presented both in-person and online
This program is not expected to be available in the meeting's On Demand product.
Morning Seminar
Francois V. Bolduc, MD, PhD
Child Neurology and Developmental Neurology
Participants should be able to understand the latest diagnostic definitions of ASD and ID; understand the contribution of genetic risk factors and genetic pathways involved in ASD and ID; recognize clinical features seen in ASD and IDs in children and adults, recognize common syndromic presentations, specific associated neurological symptoms/signs and neuroimaging abnormalities; and understand the diagnostic work-up process for a presumed genetic etiology. Participants should be able to select which type of genetic test to perform by taking into account patient history, clinical presentation, and family history. Participants should also understand a typical genomic report including the interpretation of test results and gain knowledge of what is not covered by the test and would need to be investigated further. Participants should have a basic ability to critically interpret the literature and to access databases that may help the neurologist to understand the implication of a given genetic change; have an understanding of the medical, ethical, and legal implications of genetic testing; understand the current available treatments for ID and ASD; and become familiar with how to enroll patients in clinical trials for experimental treatments.
