Participants should be able to discuss in general terms the effects that ethical norms and legal requirements have on their practice, and in what circumstances individual practice patterns should be determined by ethical norms vs. legal requirements; describe the purpose of expert witness testimony, the qualifications of an expert witness according to the AAN, and activities that are considered expert witness testimony according to the AAN; describe the advantages and pitfalls of using emerging technologies in legal settings; and describe legal issues in the treatment of patients with epilepsy, including work and driving restrictions, employment and academic discrimination, and disclosure of risks of epilepsy and epilepsy treatment.
