Emerging Leaders

Designed to identify, engage, and mentor early career members who are committed to professional, community, and society leadership; and are looking to develop and grow their leadership skills and apply them to long-term AAN involvement.  This program includes executive leadership education, Insights Discovery system, mentoring opportunities, and collaboration with peers.

Emerging Leaders has been the single most impactful experience of my professional life. My work with the AAN is incredibly rewarding, pairs me with amazing people, and actually helps prevent burnout. None of this would have been possible without Emerging Leaders!

The application period is now open and will close at 11:59 p.m. CDT on June 4, 2018.



Talented and highly motivated early-career (less than 10 years out of residency or training) US member neurologists who are committed to the profession of neurology and to providing high-quality patient-centered care.


Program Overview

Through the program you will:

  • Complete program pre-work including articles, leadership assessments and exercises to prepare for the in-person kick-off
  • Develop organizational leadership skills
  • Be empowered to set and achieve a personal leadership  goal
  • Develop strategies for leading self and others
  • Attend mandatory leadership workshops (all expenses paid) in conjunction with October 2018 Fall Conference and April 2019 Annual Meeting
  • Take part in monthly coaching conference calls with a mentor or leadership consultant
  • Propose, plan, and execute an in-depth AAN committee-assigned leadership project or goal, with feedback and coaching from a mentor and small group

Time Commitment

Participants are required to attend all leadership retreats, coaching calls, and small group calls. The AAN covers all program-related expenses for the selected participants.

Participants will be matched with a mentor who is a current AAN leader.


Key Program Dates

Attend mandatory leadership workshops (all expenses paid):

  • October of 2018 in conjunction with the Fall Conference in Las Vegas
  • May of 2019 in conjunction with the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia


Application Requirements

AAN members interested in participating in the program should submit the following documents in PDF format as part of the application process: 

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Photo
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Letter of interest

Preference will be given to applicants who have not completed any of the following AAN Leadership Programs: Transforming Leaders Program, Women Leading in Neurology, and Practice Leadership Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between ELF and ELP?

A: This program is similar to the very successful Emerging Leaders Forum, but will be revamped to allow broader participation (16) and more specific focus on the early career neurologist (less than 10 years out of residency training).

Q: Do I qualify for ELP or TLP?

A: If you are less than 10 years out of residency training you qualify for ELP. If you are more than 10 years out of residency training you qualify for TLP.

Q: Do I get a mentor?

A: Yes, ELP participants are paired up with an AAN-approved leadership mentor.

Q: What are the applications graded on?

A: The application criteria is set by the Career Leadership Subcommittee and can be found in the Application Requirements section of the webpage.

Q: Does this program have a personal project?

A: ELP does not have a personal project component. However, chairs of AAN Committees will assign a group project to be worked on for the duration of the program.

Q: What if I cannot make one of the in-person meetings?

A: All in-person meetings are mandatory to attend so participants would need to make scheduling adjustments or apply next year. No deferments will be allowed.
