FAST Act Clears Major Hurdles

The Furthering Access to Stroke Telemedicine (FAST) Act is getting closer to the finish line with two major actions occurring in the last two weeks:

  • The Senate version, S. 431 by Sen. John Thune (R-SD), unanimously passed the full Senate as part of the CHRONIC Care Act, S. 870.
  • The House version, H.R. 1148 by Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA), unanimously passed the full House Energy and Commerce Committee. This makes the bill eligible for consideration on the House floor, which could happen sometime in October.

Legislation rarely passes the House and Senate in “standalone” form. Various legislative proposals are often packaged into larger bills and attached to “must-pass” legislation at the end of the year. There are opportunities for this to occur, including the addition of the FAST Act, before the end of 2017.

News and Notes

  • For several years, the AAN has supported congressional efforts to create US postage stamps to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's disease. The Postal Service recently announced they would create an Alzheimer's postage stamp.

  • Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, MD, resigned, and his replacement has yet to be announced.

  • Congress failed to renew federal funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) before it expired on September 30. The AAN sent an action alert at the end of last week asking Congress to act to ensure coverage for more than nine million children.

  • The AAN signed onto a letter led by the AMA urging Congress to enact legislation to allow CMS to continue a flexible approach to MACRA implementation.

  • AAN Government Relations Committee (GRC) member Donn Dexter, MD, FAAN, recently held a successful medical provider event for Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), a member of the House Ways & Means Health Subcommittee.

  • GRC member Sarah Song, MD, MPH, successfully led the first annual meeting of the Illinois State Neurological Society last weekend, with 95 attendees and nine exhibitors. AAN Board member and GRC Vice-Chair James Goldenberg, MD, FAAN, was an AAN-sponsored speaker on MACRA.

  • GRC member Janice Wiesman, MD, published an article in Practical Neurology titled “NeuroAdvocacy: Why Lobbying Matters.”
