Learning Objectives
Conflict is inevitable in any dynamic, high-performing group—but it doesn’t have to be destructive. This interactive session reframes conflict as a natural and often productive force when approached with conflict resilience—the combined mindset and skillset to sit with and grow from conflict—drawing on insights from neurology, psychology, and three decades of applied research and teaching from the Harvard Program on Negotiation, delivered across multiple medical specialties and physician leadership programs. Blending lecture, micro-skills exercises, reflection, and real-world scenarios, participants should be able to describe conflict resilience and its relationship to conflict management/resolution; recognize the underlying structure of challenging conflicts; increase awareness of personal strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for skills development; apply systematic preparation methods for high-stakes or identity-based conflicts; strengthen skills in deep listening and effective assertion; reframe binary or zero-sum disagreements into opportunities for joint problem-solving; and sustain conflict resilience in complex, emotionally charged, or multiparty situations.
