Dr. Thomas R. Swift Elected 29th President of the American Academy of Neurology

Saint Paul, Minn. -

Thomas R. Swift, MD, was elected the 29th president of the American Academy of Neurology at the 57th Annual Meeting held April 9 – 16 in Miami Beach, Fla. “I’m proud to be president of the largest neurological organization in the world,” Swift said. “Our primary purpose is to serve our patients and improve neurological care for people with neurological illness.” Swift, a Medical College of Georgia neurologist, has served the Academy in many positions since his membership in 1975 including serving as a member of the board of directors, chairman of the AAN Annual Meeting Management committee, and the longest-serving member of the Science Committee. He also serves on prestigious journal editorial boards and is a member of many neurological societies. "Dr. Swift''''s lifelong dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy and its Foundation is legendary among our members and our staff. We look forward to an exciting two years under Dr. Swift''''s leadership," said Catherine M. Rydell, Executive Director of the AAN. Swift received his medical degree and residency in neurology from Cornell University and was a fellow in neurophysiology at the Mayo Clinic before coming to the Medical College of Georgia, where he chaired the department of neurology for 20 years and is now professor emeritus. Swift was the first delegate for Electrodiagnostic Medicine to the American Medical Association. He also served as the president of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and president of the Society of Clinical Neurologists. In addition to Swift, other members that were elected to the board of directors at the Annual Meeting are president elect, Stephen M. Sergay, MD; treasurer, David A. Stumpf, MD; and directors, Mindy L. Aisen, MD, Walter J. Koroshetz, MD, Ralph L. Sacco, MD, and Catherine Zahn, MD.
