Gina M. Clark Receives Extended Neuroscience Award
ST. PAUL, Minn -
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is awarding the 2007 Extended Neuroscience Award to Gina M. Clark, D.Phil., a medical student at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, IA. Clark is being honored for her essay on the comparison of brain asymmetries and left- and right-sided functions. The essay drew from original research she conducted for her D.Phil. at Oxford University prior to medical school. Clark will receive the award during the American Academy of Neurology’s 59th Annual Meeting in Boston, held April 28 – May 5, 2007. The Extended Neuroscience Award seeks to stimulate interest in the field of neurology as an exciting and challenging profession by offering highly competitive awards for the best essay. This is one of four Medical Student Essay Awards offered by the American Academy of Neurology. Clark’s essay, “Automated analyses of global and local cerebral asymmetries and their relation to lateralized functions,” focuses on the structural asymmetries in the right and left hemispheres of the brain as it relates to processes – ¬such as being right- or left-handed or language – by looking at MRI scans. “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the American Academy of Neurology for my work,” said Clark. The 59th Annual Meeting takes place in Boston’s Hynes Convention Center. It is the world’s largest annual gathering of neurologists.
